6th Annual Hispanic Studies UCR Graduate Student Conference

Tales of the Borderland:
Crossing physical and Textual Borders in the Hispanic World

Saturday, April 21, 2012

Keynote Speaker: Darío Jaramillo Agudelo

The graduate students of the department of Hispanic Studies at the University of California, Riverside invite individual papers or panels for our conference  “Tales of the Borderland: Crossing Physical and Textual Borders in the Hispanic World” being held on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

The notion of the “border” has become increasingly relevant within the transatlantic dialogue in the world of Hispanic literature. Besides the physical connotation commonly associated with the border— as a geopolitical frontier between states—this conference aims to challenge this traditional definition by understanding “border” as a critical, flexible line crossed by discourses, themes, practices or individuals. Within our current information age, where digital technologies have erased previous geographical divisions, it seems necessary to examine the overlapping, links, connections, or transgressions that problematize our representation of traditional themes, artistic expression and mediatic platforms, that connect and trespass the Hispanic world.

This conference will be open to all graduate students and professors interested in literary creation coming from the Iberian Peninsula, the Caribbean and Latin America. Due to the interdisciplinary approach that this conference proposes, the presentations will cover (but will be not limited to) the following fields: literature, linguistics, historical perspectives, transatlantic studies, performance studies, film and video, Chicano/a studies, ethnic and indigenous studies, religious studies, gender studies and queer studies.

Part of these discourses include, but are not limited to: textual genre interaction (hybrid novel, prose and poetry), fluctuating sexual and racial divisions, psychological dichotomies (the notion of normality), political divisions, arts cutting through literary aesthetics, film and other visual media embedded in the written discourse, technological remediation of written texts, and other mediatic and transmedia productions.
